eco friendly cleaners make their mark

Armed with nothing but pleasant memories of her mother’s herbal remedies and cleaning agents, Jamaican-born Muffetta Kreuger found plenty inspiration for a line of natural cleaning products which are safe, non toxic and environmentally friendly.

Her mother was an avid fan of natural herbs, using them abundantly in cooking, cleaning chores and home cures. Ingredients in the eco friendly product line are much the same – an assortment of herbs such as thyme, rosemary, sage and lemongrass long renowned for their impact on culinary flavors; less known for their anti bacterial, insecticidal and cleansing properties.

The roots of Muffetta’s Naturals may stretch back to the founder’s childhood, but the trigger to do something came from an unpleasant incident some 16 years ago: She passed out from cleaning with bleach while on the job with her cleaning company. Toxic and harsh cleaning agents like bleach are known to degrade indoor air quality as they contain harmful ammonia, perfumes, aluminum and petroleum based chemicals.

Her products are offered as an antidote to indoor air pollution which is increasingly responsible for eye, skin irritation and burns and respiratory and chronic health problems including cancer.

The eco friendly Jamaican company, started May 2011, harvests the herbs and manufactures the products in May Pen in Clarendon, a bustling semi rural parish on the south coast of Jamaica. Company Executive Omar Blagrove says that the eco friendly products are 100 per cent Jamaican, but the company is also 100 percent international.

Omar, who spoke to The Wellness Project (Jamaica) in between harvesting lemongrass in the field, says local and international sales are increasing and customer reviews from Jamaican, American and British clients are very good. Most customers are surprised at how effective and natural our products are he said, and that they are in fact made in Jamaica.

Thanks Pat. An omni bus story on cold press coconut oil is in the cards, showing all the different manufacturers and retail locations, plus its benefits. Thanks once again

Great work Gillian! You are truly innovative.

You could also feature cold press coconut oil which excellent for the skin etc. There is a small RADA shop at 191 Old Hope Road, you could speak with the lady there.

All the best and congrats!

Thanks for your comment Chrissiej, my very first on Hubpages! I'm looking forward to hearing her details, as I would love to talk to her and follow up this very interesting story. Best Wishes

Extremely interesting. There is also a lady in St. Ann who makes facial soaps and lotions from cerassee, nutmeg, eucalyptus and several other herbs. These were created out of her frustation when she could not find a 'proper' solution to husband's severe eczema. If I come across the name of the lady, I will post it.
